Counseling services

Counseling services are provided at The Institute by interns, residents, and senior staff members who are trained in religion, spirituality and the behavioral sciences. Pastoral counselors do not impose their personal religious beliefs upon others. Persons of all faiths and persons of no religious affiliations are equally welcome. Every person’s faith and values are respected. Our counselors are able to explore the religious or spiritual dimensions of the problems the person brings as needed.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, or MBCT, is designed for people who suffer repeated bouts of depression or chronic unhappiness. It combines the ideas of cognitive therapy with meditative practices and attitudes based on the cultivation of mindfulness.

Recent research has also shown that people who have been clinically depressed three or more times in their life find that learning mindfulness-based skills helps to considerably reduce their chances of depression returning.

What does MBCT help treat?

Depression and anxiety

Food and eating issues

Low mood and negative thoughts

Body sensations such as weariness and sluggishness

Psychosis

If you can relate to any of the above issues, mindfulness-based therapy may be right for you. MBCT helps people separate themselves from their thoughts and moods and teaches them how to recognize their sense of being, and aims to give participants the necessary tools to combat depressive symptoms as they arise.

Evidence indicates that mindfulness-based therapy may reduce the rate of depressive relapse by 50%. If you or someone you know will benefit from mindfulness-based therapy, please reach out today so we can schedule an appointment.

Spiritual Direction and Pastoral Counseling

We provide counseling services via video conferencing, called Telehealth. Thanks to modern technology, just about everyone in the U.S. has a smart phone or tablet capable of video chat. This ease of access to make video calls has revolutionized the health industry, allowing doctors and counselors to meet with patients through a video call.

Through the Patient Portal, you are able to receive and send back forms and documents saving travel time to the counseling office. More importantly, you can request/cancel appointments, email your therapist, and keep “social distancing” protocols. Our Telehealth service is HIPAA-compliant, making sure that privacy of your sessions is protected.

You can also make your counseling fee payment through our online HIPAA-compliant credit card payment system.
